The Graduate Research Lab Committee of Department of Computer Science held a talk on "Deciphering the Secret Code of Life; Genetics for Computer Scientists". The guest speaker was Dr Muhammad Zaman Khan Assir who is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Allama Iqbal Medical College Lahore. The guest speaker talked about recent revolution in sequencing technologies that has led to an outpouring of enormous data that is being shared by researchers across the globe.

He mentioned that since the cracking of the human code of life in the year 2000, the progress in the field of genetics has been remarkable. With the availability of big data, the existing challenge is how to extract meaningful information that would be helpful in understanding human health and diseases. He praised the role of computer scientists and mentioned how the CS graduates can help in biomedical research using machine learning techniques. Dr. Zaman discussed recent advances in the field have been helpful in deciphering innumerable secrets hidden in this complex code of life.
